Metamorphosis Cup

By Wildcatdad17

Introduction

With the kickoff of Devon season 3 came a new in-game season as well. This month the meta developers wanted to find a format that helped highlight some of the new changes to the meta. Additionally, we wanted to do our best to keep things as neutral as possible and eliminate hard counter matchups. So as we head into the season for Tales of Transformation, Devon entered into the Metamorphosis Cup.

Our Thinking

When looking into the move update Dragon typing stood out as a massive update having FIVE
different moves modified. In addition to the massive rework many Pokémon of this type found
themselves with new coverage moves. This led Dragon typing to be the very first type added.
Additionally, looking into the move update we can clearly see that Flying types got a lot of love
with four updates. This allowed us to have two different typings that don’t have any direct
interactions with one another. No good meta can exist with only two Types, but we wanted to
pick a decent third typing to allow for some more new fun. That led us to the addition of Psychic types. This allowed the reworked Confusion as well as some Pokémon with access to new moves to be included.

Air Drops

While the meta looked extremely interesting and neutral, we wanted to be able to include some other Pokémon that could help core break common cores as well as let Trainers leverage some of their existing favorites. With that in mind we added Jellicent, Trevenant, Seaking, Primeape, and Alolan Marowak. These Pokémon all have unique roles and while all are not ranked extremely high, they can put in a lot of work.

Banned Types

In wanting to keep the meta as neutral as possible we looked to remove hard counter typings.
These included Dark due to its interaction with Psychic, Electric for its interactions with Flying
and Water, Steel and Ice due to their interactions with Dragon and Flying.

Banned Pokémon

Some Pokémon are just too good in any given meta and Metamorphosis Cup is no exception.
Upon initial testing we found the need to ban the following Pokémon. Galarian Rapidash for its
extremely high win rate and large move pool. Togetic for its ability to fully wall many of the
Dragons. Purified Giratina Altered due to how extremely unlikely it is to be obtained via standard game play. Shadow Incarnate Tornadus and Indeedee due to their announcement coming after initial meta investigation. Additionally, any Pokémon that is released following the announcement of the meta will remain banned.

Banned Moves

One move that received a rework but can still overwhelm a meta full of Dragons is Charm. With that in mind we have chosen to remove Charm from the meta. Pokémon who learn Charm can still be used as long as they are leveraging another fast move. A great example is Togekiss should run Peck over Charm.

Banned Tags

As with all Devon metas, Megas will be banned.

Important Note

Any Pokémon not listed in the PvPoke rankings shall be considered banned.
